2009 NEWSLETTER

We arrived back in Idaho from Alaska on the 18th of August. Stopped long enough at our home in Ahsahka to unload and gather gear and headed for Challis on the 24th where our hunting guides were to show up. On the 25th we started putting gear and camps together and on the 28th started packing in and setting up camps. Our first archery hunt started the 6th of September. We were really fortunate to have the same crew back from last year, and to our delight, we had one of our old long time guides who wanted to return for the fall.

We ran two camps during archery season, two hunters to the camp. Elizabeth ran one camp this fall, and Ken the other. Archery season was very warm so hunting was not the best it could have been. Even with the warm weather, several large bulls got our adrenalin running, and gave us some great experiences. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to harvest any. We only had one hunter get a shot at a nice bull, but unfortunately he was not retrieved. Every archery hunter saw bulls, and had some exciting experiences.

The rifle bull elk hunt was not up to it usual standards because 5 of the 6 days of hunting, it snowed hard and was very cold. We accumulated up to 2’ of snow during this hunt. The elk were holed up because of the severity of the storm and did not start moving until the last day of the hunt. We saw elk everywhere on this day, but because it was the last day we didn’t have time to be choosy for a large bull, and one of the hunters settled for a nice bull, and one of the other hunters missed his bull. The third and last hunter couldn’t get a clear shot when a herd almost ran him over.     Elizabeth & Ken both drew bull tags this year and were fortunate enough to take two nice 5 x 5’s towards the end of the season. The IDF&G department limited our cow hunts to only 25 tags this year, but we were fortunate enough to have 3 tags drawn. Our granddaughter drew one of these tags. All three hunters harvested their cows. They will have some tasty eating this winter.

Our mule deer hunts were fantastic this fall. Due to the severity of the early storms in October the large bucks showed up early this fall, and by the time our unlimited controlled hunt the last week of October came around, there were bucks everywhere. We saw many trophies that managed to get away. Our hunters enjoyed viewing lots of bucks every day, and all managed to take deer. A couple of them are in the new photo’s along with Elizabeth’s & Kens Bulls. Hope you have enjoyed this short version of the 2009 season and that we will be hearing from you soon and we can give you a more detailed description of the hunts.

Happy hunting, Ken & Elizabeth
